Mathias Heppding

Head of capacity and order management, Volkswagen AG

I’ve been working in logistics, IT, and inventory management for over 20 years – always with the goal of making things better, understanding processes, and bringing people along. Currently, I lead the Capacity and Order Management team at Volkswagen Group After Sales. My role combines global steering, IT, and inventory expertise to manage a complex depot network efficiently.

Before that, I spent over two years in Singapore as General Manager Parts Logistics – a time full of learning, both professionally and culturally. Earlier, I held several roles at Volkswagen in Kassel: as Regional Manager for Southwest Europe, Head of Internal Inventory Consulting, and Senior Inventory Analyst – always focused on creating transparency and improving processes.

I started my career at Fiducia & GAD IT AG, first as a software developer, then as an internal IT auditor. That time shaped my technical mindset and my eye for structure.

The pop in my job:

I like it when things run smoothly – especially in the supply chain. I enjoy finding solutions that work not just on paper, but in real life. And I believe that real change only happens when everyone understands the “why” – from management to the shopfloor. That’s why I lead with openness, honesty, and trust. Because in the end, it’s always about the people.

Session

What key questions need to be asked for effective process mining when transforming monitoring applications?

Case Study

Monday, September 29

03:00 pm - 03:30 pm

Live in Berlin

Less Details

The ability to use data from processes and workflows almost in real time creates a desire for transparency, process standardisation and optimisation. The aim is to increase efficiency and reduce costs. In addition to technical requirements such as data quality and data availability or integration into existing systems, legal issues such as data protection and security must also be taken into account.

  • So much for the theory. But which other questions will come in mind, when there is a need to transform monitoring application into process mining?
  • Can process mining replace monitoring tools or is it just a useful add-on?
  • Why is WHY the most important question by analysing process outliers on the shopfloor?
  • Why can it help to be strongly focused on standard processes?
  • Is a desktop designed standard process obviously the best blue print for an efficient Workflow?

Company

Volkswagen AG

The Volkswagen site in Kassel, the Group's largest components plant, is also home to Group After Sales logistics. It ensures the worldwide supply of genuine parts and thus bears significant responsibility for the long-term mobility of our customers. The product range comprises around 480,000 items and thus covers the spare parts demand of Volkswagen Group's volume brands. Up to 70,000 order items are received daily and are prepared for despatch in the 18 internal and 17 external warehouses of the Kassel depot network. The area thus covered is approx. 1.277 million m² which is nearly 180 football pitches. Around 250 load carriers (lorries, containers, wagons) leave Kassel for the wholesale network every day. 23,500 dealers worldwide are supplied via the wholesale warehouses.
